Vickie Henderson

vickie henderson

Local artist, writer and nature blogger, Vickie Henderson, enjoys any opportunity to photograph and sketch nature and the love she feels for her subjects is evident in the many products of her talents.

"Nature is the inspiration for my art," Vickie explains.  "The more I experience the natural world, its beauty, diversity and interconnectedness, the more I want to express what I see and feel through art."

And that artistic urge may range anywhere from writing blog posts to designing jewelry.

Vickie's art media include watercolor, ink and watercolor, and wood-burned art on hard shell gourds.  And each of these media has something different to offer her in the way of expression and satisfaction.

bowl"Painting with watercolor is like dancing-a partnership that's alive with movement, fun and surprises.  Combining watercolor with ink adds a more child-like expression and gives me the urge to "color outside the lines".  Gourd art brings something altogether different to the table, a bit of mystery and enchantment.  Found all over the world and used historically for both functional and ritual objects, the hard shell gourd is an art object unto itself, stimulating a kind of reverence in me, a deeper connection with the earth and all its mysteries."

Amazingly enough, a design she spontaneously created for a piece of gourd art also inspired her current line of jewelry featuring the endangered Whooping crane.

Her current projects include the development of a bound watercolor sketch book that will result in a satisfying personal record of her experiences in nature; and completion of the final illustrations and text for a children's activity book due to be distributed free in the fall of 2009 and designed to stimulate the imaginations of future conservationists.
