1st Semester
September 14th @ 11 am
Class 1: Knowing Your Backyard Birds
Join us for the kickoff of year 3 of our award winning WBUniversity with a look at the 30 bird species you are most apt to see in your yard at different times. How to identify them and where they like to hang out.
October 12th @ 11 am
Class 2: How Baking Soda Saved Birds
Yes, baking soda! In the late 1800s, all birds were seen as opportunities for target practice. The shooters did not know the difference between a finch and a wren. Then the conservation-minded creators of Arm & Hammer Baking Soda came to the defense and started slipping free birds cards into the boxes of their bicarbonate of soda. Each card identified a different species with the slogan, "For the good of all, do not destroy the birds."
November 2nd @ 10 am **
Class 3: OWL-OLOGY ( Live OWLS)
We have 4 species of owls that live around us and are active at night. But unless you hear them, you probably won't know they are there. Yet, some can be attracted to use nest boxes. (with Owl Ridge Raptor Center)
December 14th @ 11 am
Class 4: Creating A Bird Friendly Yard
Join the WBU staff and learn about the different feeders, foods, birdbaths, and nest boxes available. Plus Stephen Lyn will add a note about all the native trees, shrubs, and flowers that some of your birds rely on.
2nd Semester
February 8th @ 11 am
Class 5: Bird Love
Some birds mate for life. Others are only together long enough to produce one clutch but all go through somewhat different but very interesting courtship behavior to strengthen their pair bond.
March 8th @ 10 am **
Class 6: Odd Birds: that I rarely talk about (NEW CLASS)
Nighthawks are not hawks, killdeer are shorebirds a long way form the beach. And there are other odd birds like crossbills, waxwings, and lesser yellowlegs. Loggerhead shrikes are fierce songbirds that kill with abandon and leave their victims impaled on a spike. There's lost ducks called muscovies and vulture that clean up our roadkill. Come learn about them all! (* with Michelle Wilson and vulture, Zoe, from Ijams) *Subject to change based on availability of the vulture.
April 12th @ 11 am
Class 7: Hummingbirds
After spending their winters in Central America, the ruby-throated hummingbirds are due back in April. Let's learn about their life histories and everything you need to do to make your yard a hummingbird haven.
May 3rd @ 10 am
Class 8: Bad Dads, Good Fathers (New Class)
As Father's Day approaches in June, we honor them, do you ever wonder just who are the best papas and who are the do-nothings in the bird world? Who helps om the most and who are deadbeat dads? Some male birds take their turn at incubating the eggs, others do not. Some help feed the nestlings while others are no-shows. Did you know, bluebird fathers feed their nesting daughters more often than their nesting sons? Come find out why!!
